Gainer Pays For Ethics Violations; Made Illegal Ad W/ Taxpayer $$

The Charleston Daily Mail is reporting today on sanctions from the West Virginia Ethics Commission against five-term incumbent WV Auditor Glen Gainer (D)-Parkersburg.

Gainer entered into a conciliation agreement with the Ethics Commission after improperly using state time and resources to film a commercial, featuring himself, for Visa. Visa does hundreds of millions of dollars of transactions for the Auditor’s Office through a state contract with Citibank.

This is not the first Gainer goof in his most recent term.

Back in 2009, Gainer and his office fell for an Internet scam that led to over a million taxpayers dollars being wired to criminals in Kenya.

The State of West Virginia and its insurers were on the hook for more than $1.5 million lost to the scammers and were sued for the remainder by the vendors whose money was lost.

Gainer endorsed Barack Obama for President on May 2, 2008.
