WV Democrat Convention To Feature Dog Racing

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia’s Democrat leaders meet at the Charleston Civic Center this weekend for their convention. They will vote on whether to support a party platform and who will represent the Party to back Obama at their Charlotte national convention.

It is unclear if Governor Earl Tomblin will attend this weekend’s events. He is slated to return from his nine-day junket to Japan on Saturday.

But his family’s greyhound racing business will have a big part in Friday night’s festivities. At least five dogs from Tomblin Kennels will race for your government dollars on tonight’s schedule.

The Mardi Gras Casino is offering shuttle service for Democrat attendees from downtown Charleston to a reception at the Cross Lanes dog track complex.

We sincerely hope the Democrats get out to the dog track in time for the fifth race tonight,” said WV Young Republicans spokesman Rob Cornelius. “Though the dog starts the day as a 10-1 underdog, we at the West Virginia Federation of Young Republicans have our fingers crossed for Sweet Freda.”

That dog, is on a cold streak, finishing last in three of her previous five races.

The Tomblin Family has often led the state in receiving dog racing subsidy payments. Last year that total exceeded $300,000 to the Governor’s mother Freda & brother Carl. His nephew recently was certified to receive state subsidy payments for racing as well.

“The Tomblins get rich, and we all pay,” said Cornelius. “The money spent on dog racing bonuses last year in our state would pay for 1,128 Promise Scholarships. Seriously.”
